Sunny Days

I haven't painted sunflowers for quite awhile and was appreciating a beautiful sunny day so I thought these flowers would make a good subject. I had a small ampersand aquabord (also called claybord textured) and wanted this to be a loose watercolor painting but, as usual, it became a much tighter painting than I had planned. I'm such a literal person it's hard for me to paint loose, gestural paintings. I really appreciate them by other artists but can't seem to paint in that style. Oh well, I guess our personalities are what they are and we expose them through our art.

  1. What beautiful sunflowers, Nancy. I too am a literal person and enjoyed your thoughts on attempting to paint loosely. I am much the same as you on that one. Still, your lines are always so clean and are just standout. That is why I keep coming back; I enjoy them so much!!

  2. I love your painting. Sunflowers are my favorite flower. I completely understand your literal interpretations. I too struggle with trying to be looser in my paintings. I guess it goes back to the old adage we always want what we don't have. If you have curly hair you long to have straight hair etc. Maybe it's better to embrace it and move on. Your painting put a smile on my face!

  3. Sherry and Carrie, Thank you very much. It's nice to know that there are more literal artists out there that struggle try a looser approach. Carrie, I think you're right. That 'grass is always greener' thinking is part of the human condition. I wonder if there are artists that paint loosely that want to paint like we do.

  4. Hi Nancy;
    Thank you for stopping by my blog and for your comments. I am glad to have found your blog as well and enjoyed seeing your beautiful watercolors. I have painted sunflowers too, and just like you, start out trying to paint them loose and gestural but that never happens. Smile! I end up with just the opposite. i really appreciate them by other artists though! One of my favorites is Charles Reid among others. I look forward to seeing more of your art work and will drop by for a visit often. By for now. ross
