Mt. Fuji From the Golf Course

Here is a small palette knife painting that I did to submit to the Virtual Paintout challenge.  This month's location is Japan.  I found this beautiful view of Mt. Fuji from a golf course (hence the name) .  Can you imagine golfing in such a beautiful spot?  It would be like you were walking around in a post card.

All of the palette knife paintings that I've done so far have been 6" x 6" as is this one.  I am currently working on a 16" x 20" and it's really fun to be painting one so much larger.  I'm still using the same size palette knife which is only about an inch long.  I should probably switch to a larger on but I feel really comfortable with the small one therefore it's taking quite a long time to finish the painting.  It's also hard to get used to mixing so much paint.  It's amazing how much paint it takes when using the palette knife.

I've been thinking about cake a lot this week as I'm "frosting" my canvases.  I thought I'd gotten away from having that image in my head when I use the palette knife but it's returned with a vengeance this week.  I need to be sure that I'm not hungry when I'm painting or I might end up at the local bakery.

  1. Oh! Cake! I so love cake...the boxed mixes from the grocery store. German chocolate, to be precise, or white with milk chocolate frosting in a pinch. GAH! Now look, Nancy! I've got cake on my mind!

Love the colors in this gorgeous scene! I would have to say it is wasted on golf. Needs to be my own personal paradise!!

  3. Hi Sherry, yes, cake is the best food group. It doesn't matter the flavor or frosting. They are all good.

    Thanks Theresa.

  4. Wasn't seeing Mt. Fuji while roaming around in Google just amazing? You caught it perfect, right there, in the background, with all that beautiful green & reds in front. Very nice work!

  5. Great Autumn colors, I never think of Japan in autumn. I would definitely suggest using a larger palette knife on a larger canvas, wouldn't it feel liberating to move paint in bigger strokes?

  6. Nancie, I wasn't even looking for Mt. Fuji so when I saw it on the screen, it surprised me and having a golf course in the foreground made it even better.

Robin, you're right about the bigger palette knife but I'm so used to the little one. That bigger painting isn't going so well at the moment. It will not be ready to enter into the show. I will probably go back to it at some point in the future but for now, I'm really frustrated with it and really don't like it at all. Maybe if I'd used a bigger palette knife...
