Monster Kumquats

We have a small kumquat tree in our backyard and the first two years it had regular sized kumquats on it. Since then, they have been about 3" long and 2" in diameter! I have never seen another one like it. I've asked a couple of people at nurseries if it is possible for it to have cross pollinated with the meyer lemon next to it but they claim that is impossible. Whatever caused it, I just glad it happened. They are great sliced thinly in salads or just to eat by themselves. That way, I can get rid of all the seeds since I really don't like crunching on those. It also makes a great conversation topic since nobody can guess what kind of fruit it is.

  1. Love the story of the kumquats, as I am eating some today! They are almost taking the shape of the loquats that we grow. In my dictionary it says that kumquats hybridize with other citrus trees. who knows? Beautiful painting, it looks a lot like your silk work with the outlining. By the way, I've had good results in adding color to the water-soluble gutta.

  2. It makes sense that the tree has hybridized with my lemon. I can't think of any other reason that the fruit would change after a couple of years.

What colors have you used in the resist? I mixed some black ink into mine but haven't painted the piece or steamed it. I'm hoping that by using the water-soluble resist with color in it that the black lines will be more even in color. With the black gutta, it is darker in some areas than others.
