Magnolia Duo

I decided to push my frustration level this week and finish this painting that I started about 5 years ago and which, after much cursing, I had put into my unfinished pile. It is small, 5" x 7" and is painted on clay board. That surface is very unforgiving and working on it is so different than the way I like to work. I worked more loosely (which is a good thing) and actually enjoyed it. Will I buy more clayboard in the future? I probably won't but I do have some aqua board, also made by Ampersand that I'm excited to try. I does feel good to finish another old project.

  1. I've never heard of clayboard, but this is fabulous Nancy! Look at that intensity of color (even after 5 years). Beautiful piece, truly. I have an unfinished piece myself...I hope I get to it before 5 years have elapsed. I think I'm already in year 2!

  2. I went on the Ampersand website last night and watercolor isn't one of the uses listed for claybord. No wonder I had such trouble! Their aquabord should be easier to use.

  3. It's beautiful Nancy! Moral of the story? Never throw anything out - you never know when it might speak to you again and be transformed! I hope you're very pleased with this after all these years.

  4. I am pleased with it and you're right about saving paintings Deborah. I have a really hard time throwing any paintings away. That's why I have so many unfinished ones that I bring out and finish along the way. There are a lot that start out as watercolors that can't be saved with more watercolor. Those become mixed media paintings!
