Rushing Water

I can't seem to stop myself from painting with a palette knife which I find interesting since oil painting doesn't even rate in the top three of my favorite mediums list.  I'm just glad that my cravings for cake have stopped!

This is from another photo taken in Alaska.   As you get closer to the glaciers, the water has this beautiful turquoise color.  It may not be quite this turquoise but I decided to employ that artistic license thingy  just because I can.  What a feeling of power!  Everybody would want to be an artist if they knew how much power we have. : )

I really like working on these small 6" x 6" canvases which is good because I spent most of the week organizing my studio (again).  We took out a refrigerator and I had visions of gaining so much storage space but only about half of what I thought I was going to put there actually fit.  Sigh....  I guess I need to paint faster so I can use up all of those extra (large) canvases and frames that I seem to have collected.  My new motto should be more working and less shopping when it comes to art supplies.

  1. I love the palette knife paintings, Nancy. I only have one palette knife and it looks more like a large putty knife (came in my Bob Ross oil paints kit). I've tried wielding it much like he does (for tree trunks and straight edges) and I can really get the paint off the thing. Sigh...

Anyway, I love the color of the water so that powerful artistic license of your's has been put to good use! I get a sense of cold here; not sure if you mentioned Alaska in your prose, but that may be why. Or the rocks, evergreens and oh so cold looking water. Either way, it is beautiful!

  2. Thank you Sherry. The palette knife I use is small and I have trouble manipulating that. I can't imagine using something the size of a putty knife!

  3. Your palette knife paintings remind me of the texture and depth you can get using encaustics. I think there is more energy conveyed with these palette knife creations of yours, and I love the impressionistic qualities.

  4. Robin, I really like the texture you get with your encaustics. One of these days I'll have to try that medium but for now I'll get my texture with the palette knife.

  5. Your palette knife has yielded a lovely result Nancy, the addiction to the knife has happened to me too, a sense of satisfaction seeps through as you apply thick paint :-)
I also enjoyed your latest pink creation, just marvelous!
