Serenity

This is the last of three paintings I've done for the virtual paintout challenge for August.  I've really enjoyed Prince Edward Island's beauty.  This scene has a calmness to it and I think I would like to live here surrounded by a river and these tall trees.  This is another palette knife painting.  The canvas was painted red and once it was dry, I started painting with a paintbrush but quickly switched to the palette knife.  Do you think that is a sign that I've become a palette knife addict?  Will I ever be able to use a brush with oils again?   The brushes just don't seem to have the appeal that they once did.

I like the way the red is showing through, especially in the sky.  I think I got carried away with the paint in the foreground and covered more of the red than I had intended.  Anyway, this was another fun painting to do and I do have the URL for this one so I can post it to the virtual paintout blog.

  1. I think I want to visit the island again .... or find a place in Canada to paint ... sounds like you really enjoyed yourself and the three paintings attest to your enjoyment.

  2. Just another awesome piece, Nancy. You are just so very versatile with your art! Watercolors and oils, silk and murals...Amazing really! I love these new ventures with a palette knife too. I suspect you will always find a place for the brush though. Key word is versatile!

  4. Very nice painting! The knife gives such nice texture to this scene.

Virtual Paintout is one of my favorite challenges and Prince Edward Island is just beautiful. I hope to visit it in person one day. :-)

  5. I love the red popping through the sky also. It looks like fall, makes me want to start a fire and have some cider:) I've always wanted to visit Prince Edward Island, I love Anne of Green Gable! Loving the palette knife work!

  6. Thanks Peggy, this month at virtual paintout was very good.

Thanks Sherry, you are probably right about the brushes but it is so freeing to paint with the palette knife and for me, it's a good exercise since I'm such a tight painter.

Thanks Mary Anne. I think I will try the red canvas again.

Thanks Linda, virtual paintout is my favorite challenge and I look forward to the first day of each month to see where Bill is taking us.

Thanks Carrie, it does feel like fall, doesn't it? I wonder what time of year the google car took these pictures. When I google my street address, it looks like google was here about 3 years ago (based on the construction of the house down the street) and probably late spring. Of course, that's just a guess. In California, the only season that I would be able to know for sure would be fall but based on how many roses are on the bushes, I know it's not winter or the first bloom of spring and there are too many for it to be during the hot summer.

  7. I love this one. Those reds popping throughout, makes me think of autumn leaves floating in the wind.

  10. Just keep painting with whatever when you create such paintings does it matter how we get there. I often look down and realise I am using my fingers.
