Bird of Paradise Murals

Here are two murals that I recently finished.  They are painted in niches on either side of a door in Mexico.  They are very similar because of their symmetrical architectural placement but I didn't want them to be identical.

This week is the anniversary of my posting a painting each week for the past 3 years.  I think my art has progressed throughout this process and it's really been a lot of fun.  I plan to keep it up and hopefully, I will post more than one each week in the coming year.  My self-imposed deadline every Monday has kept me on track and some weeks it's been a real challenge getting a painting done but compared to the many daily painters, I look like a slacker.  Of course, many of my paintings are much larger and more involved than most of the daily paintings but I should be able to do some smaller paintings each week along with my larger paintings, right?

Both murals are:

  2. Wow, Nancy! These are beautiful indeed! How on earth did you get a commission down in Mexico? They sure knew what they were doing in commissioning you. And a wonderful anniversary to you as well. I know what you mean about being a slacker. That is how I feel about my art too. It takes me personally way too long to finish a piece!

  3. These truly are paradise, Nancy. I love the shape you had to work with, and that you did NOT replicate them exactly. I have been blogging about 6 months less than you and although I have never tried to post daily, I do feel blogging is an extension of being a professional painter. I definitely think our art progresses when we enhance our process with blogging. Congratulations on 3 years here!

  4. Thanks Theresa. Blogging has been so much fun, kept me focused on my art and been a way to meet other wonderful artists - like you!

Well Sherry, I'd like to say that I'm an internationally renowned artist but we have a house in Mexico which is where these are painted. These niches were crying out for murals and my husband usually leaves those decisions up to me. I'm lucky that he likes my art, or is it that he likes free art?
I love bright colors and since we've been spending time in Mexico, my love for them has grown greater, which shows in my art. Where else could you have an orange house without the neighbors hating you? Certainly not in conservative Orange County, CA. : ) Beige rules here.

Hi Robin, I totally agree that blogging is good for our art. I have found nothing negative about the blogging world and finding so many wonderful artists around the world is incredible. I look forward to seeing new 'eye candy' each day as I check out my blogging artist friends' new work. It's very inspiring and many times that is what gets me into the studio when I'm not in the mood to paint.

  5. Hi Nancy....What fun to discover each other's art! Your work is really nice. These paintings must take you a while to complete. I like that you post on a weekly basis. I have been blogging for a year or is it 2 ??? I post randomly but agree it keeps a focus and is great to meet other painters out there. perhaps we can connect in Mexico some time..I plan to explore and travel a bit next winter. I also have a CA connection and come out to San Francisco a few times a year.As far as mixing acrylic and pastels..I know nothing...I just scribble all over my paintings with the pastels..always trying new things

  7. First love the murals! They look fantastic and will look fabulous I'm sure in their new home. Second CONGRATULATIONS!!!! Just like you I post a painting a week, on Mondays, and just like you I have the same struggles with posting more. My paintings also take more time than most daily painters, so I'm going to try to post WIP, so that I don't always have to have a finished painting each post. Anyway, Congratulations again!!!

  8. That's a good idea using the WIP. I would be afraid to do that though because I think that would give me an excuse to procrastinate (like I need one) and one of the things I like is the anxiety of having to have a finished painting each Monday. I know that liking anxiety is a little weird but sometimes I've done some of my favorite paintings when I've had a short period of time and haven't been able to think the painting to death.

  10. Thanks Mikko. It was fun working in a niche. I wanted them to look like they were out in the garden and the niche was a view into that.
