Orvieto

I took the photo for this painting in 2005 in Orvieto, Italy.  It's such a charming town and I love this scene.  In fact, I painted it before in a landscape format twice as large.  For this painting,  I wanted to use the portrait format to emphasize the height of the building in the foreground.  Also, this one is painted more loosely and colorfully.  I never took a picture of the original painting and although it is hanging in our home, I'm too lazy to try to take a picture of it through the glass.  They never seem to come out well without a lot of reflections anyway so you will just have to imagine what it looks like.  : )

  2. This really is beautiful, Nancy! I love the way you've handled the shutters. There is something both old and modern in this architecture and quite honestly, I find it intriguing!

  3. Italy is very beautiful, isn't it Martinealison.

Thank you Sherry. I love all of the old buildings in Europe. I've often wondered if the local people find the buildings charming or just old. All of the old, peeling paint that is so charming there would drive me nuts if it was on our house. Re-painting would be the first thing on my to do list!

  8. Beautiful job on this! You nailed the Tuscan colors!!! When I was in Tuscany it always seemed so strange that the streets were so often absolutely empty of people.

  10. Thanks Joan. When I took this picture, the streets were fairly empty (in June). We were in a different part of Italy this past August and everywhere was SO crowded! I will never visit there at the end of summer again. Too many tourists and the locals were not as friendly as we have found in the past. I think by the end of summer they are probably really tired of having so many people surrounding their homes. I know it would drive me crazy.

Thanks Deborah. Isn't turquoise a fantastic color?

  11. Hi Nancy!... My first visit to your site!

We share many Italian sites... and memories.

I am particularly drawn to your wonderfully designed silk and watercolour paintings. They show a high level of competency and evoke an unusal warmth and vitality. Lovely!

    Good Painting!
    Warm regards,

  12. I love how you captured the "Tuscan" feel to this. It always made me laugh to see the streets of the small towns so empty in the middle of the day when everything closes up. Beautiful job!
