Palau Beach

Palau Beach sounds like it should be in the South Pacific and looks like it would be there or in the Caribbean but it is in Sardinia.  That is the location for Virtual Paintout this month.  I didn't know where Sardinia was and in case you don't either, it's in the mediterranean off the coast of Italy (and is part of Italy) just below the island of Corsica (which is part of France).  I was attracted to the cloud formations and the beautiful color of the water.  This is an oil painted on a 3/4" thick gallery wrapped canvas with the sides painted and doesn't need a frame.

  5. Nancy, I wonder where the virtual paint-out images come from? do you use someone else's photographs or video from actual locations? are there ever any copyright issues? What a wonderful way to travel the world!

  6. Thanks Sherry. I was surprised how easy that part was.

Thanks Deborah. I'd like to jump in too. It's going to be in the high 90's here today.

Hi Robin. Bill Guffey, the artist that hosts the virtual paintout blog, contacted google to check on whether or not there would be copyright infringement issues and there are not on the photos taken by the google truck. However, if you go on the google street maps site, there are also blue dots throughout the landscape. Those are photos taken by individuals and sent in to google. If you painted a scene from one of those, there would be copyright issues. Bill spells out the rules and requirements very clearly on his blog and one of the no-no s is painting from one of those blue dots. That's probably why he requires you to send the link of the scene you painted when you send in your painting.
I've seen the google truck here twice about 2 months ago. It's a very cute little car with a round thing on top that has cameras all the way around. It seems to take pictures every few seconds. When I go on google street maps, there are views that I want to paint but they are in between two pictures that have been taken.
I'm curious as to whether or not they visit an area more than one time to take pictures. The pictures of our neighborhood are about 4 years old. I can tell because the people at the end of our street re-landscaped their yard about that time and the pictures show that in progress. There are still many parts of the world that the google truck hasn't visited. In Mexico alone, very few cities have pictures of the streets taken.
