White Iris on TerraSkin

I'm playing on TerraSkin again.  The more I paint on it, the more I love it!  I think the textures that are created from the mixtures of water and paint are very interesting.  This painting is very small but I'm getting ready to do another large poured painting on TerraSkin using acrylics.  Also, I think I want to try using oils on this surface.  I'll probably thin them down a lot to take advantage of the properties of the surface and to get a sense of transparency.  I tend to want to make everything look like a watercolor because I love that look.

Irises are such delicate looking flowers and for this painting, I chose to paint a very dark background to make the white flower really pop.  I enjoyed mixing my variety of greens.  It's always a challenge to mix greens without them looking too intense and unnatural.  I'm not sure why the paint manufacturers make such fake looking greens but it is easy enough to tone them down I guess.

  2. It really is beautiful, Nancy. You inspired me to want to try the TerraSkin too. Alas, Dick Blick does not carry it. Funny you said that about trying to make other mediums look like watercolor. I always want to do the same thing.

  3. Thank you Katherine. TerraSkin is a good surface for colored pencil too!

Thanks Sherry. I think Cheap Joe's is one of the only places to buy TerraSkin in the U.S.

  5. Thank you Hilda. I would think greens would be even harder to control in pastels. I have a terrible time mixing colors in pastels.

  6. Sounds great, this new product! I can imagine that you don't have to worry about it expanding or shrinking like watercolour paper, but does it absorb the paint or does it sit on the surface? Lovely painting btw!

  8. Thank you Diana. Yes, the paint sits on the surface of TerraSkin. In many ways it is like Yupo but I like this much better. The surface isn't quite as slick and has a wonderful soft feel and I like the way it accepts the paint better too.

  10. Thank you Mary. Since the paint sits on the surface of the TerraSkin the colors are more intense and glowing.

Your so right about the greens,, Unless you mix or doctor them up they are never good .
As for TerraSkin I'd not heard of it.. I'm usually boring with the same 140lb paper.. I'll be back .
