Corsica III

I had to sneak in one more painting this month for the virtual paintout in Corsica. I found so many places I wanted to paint. I made a lot of changes from the reference photo on this one too. I just can't stop myself from trying to make an environment prettier although I find the reference photo very interesting. I added a person to make the scene feel more lived in. It's funny to me that I feel compelled to add people to my paintings for the virtual paintout. I really don't feel comfortable painting (or drawing) people so I never added them to my paintings until October, when I started the virtual paintout challenges. I'm still not ready to try them in any medium other than oil (since they can be painted over if I mess them up) but maybe this will be the year that I venture outside of my comfort zone. Below is the reference photo from Google street maps.

  1. It looks incredible - I love how careful and neat the stairs are. Out of all three Corsica paintings of yours, I like this one best.

  3. Nancy this is so lovely. Your color palette is gorgeous, as always. I must say that the original photo is beautiful, despite the agedness of the structure.

  4. Very nice, Nancy, where did you put the clutter?

  5. Thank you Sherry. I was really attracted to the original photo but I just don't seem to be able to leave things as they are.
Sylviane I think the clutter moved to my house. There sure seems to be a lot of it here. Why can't I clean it up at home like I do in my paintings?

  6. Love your art. Beautiful colors and compositions. I normally paint in acrylic or watercolor, but got oils for Christmas and have painted one so far. You have given me a look at what oils can do. Lovely, lovely pictures.

  7. Thank you Ramona. I am enjoying working in the oils although it's not my favorite medium. Watercolor is my first love but there is a lot to be said about the freedom oils give to cover up mistakes. When I started this painting, I had laundry hanging from the upstairs balcony. As I was painting, I realized the laundry was too far to the right and it would pull the viewer's eyes out of the painting. I painted it out and it was no big deal. If it had been a watercolor painting, I would have had to put it in because I had already painted everything around it and the change would have showed. I hope you have fun with the oils.

  11. Thank you Pat. It's fun to edit these old buildings. I think I must have wanted to be an architect.

  12. This is wonderful, Nancy. All the stairs, your color combination and I love that you included the woman - she really adds to the "story"!
