Santiago Canyon II

This is a second painting I've painted from pictures I took in Santiago Canyon (in Orange County).  The day we were there was such a relaxing, tranquil day and I wanted to give that feeling in this painting.  If you want to see the first one I painted, here is Santiago Canyon, which I painted about 6 months ago.

  1. I was surprised to read that this is a watercolor. To me, it looks like it could be an oil. I particularly like the rocks, just wonderful, and also the distance you show with the trees in the background.

  2. Another lovely painting, Nancy! I, too, like the background. While your soft palette keeps this space tranquil, there's a hint of mystery that makes me want to go exploring beyond those trees!

  3. Carol, it does look a bit like an oil painting, doesn't it. I've been playing around with oils lately so maybe it's influencing my watercolors too.

Thank you Rosemary. What a nice comment. I'm glad the painting is "drawing" you in...

Nancy, I am curious if you used a white watercolor paint in the rocks or anywhere?

  6. I agree with other comments, interesting watercolor, I thought it was an oil also! I enjoyed seeing the comparison of the 2 paintings, I like this one a little more, I think it is the composition I like better. It does seem like a peaceful place!

  7. You are so talented Nancy! Watercolors, oils, acrylics, palette knives, painting on silk...!!! Love both of the canyon paintings and the emotion they convey.

  8. Thanks Sheryl, I enjoyed visiting your blog too.

    Thank you Jerry.

Hi Robin, no, there is no white paint in this painting. The white is the raw paper.

Thanks Mary Anne, I spent a bit more time on this painting than the first one so I'm glad you like it better. It is a peaceful place. An unusual place to find in Orange County.

Thanks Nancy. It was fun painting such a beautiful place.

  9. Beautiful colors and shading. I really like the way the composition leads the eye in and there is so much depth with the trees in the distance.
