I love the dark green leaves with their rusty colored backs in contrast with the huge white blossoms on the Southern Magnolia trees. I've got to get a couple of these trees for our yard so I can get plenty of reference photos for future paintings.

Hi Nancy, I love the painting of the Magnolia. Your right about the contrast of warm and cool, and fussy and glossy. You have captured the life of this great flower in your painting.
ReplyDeleteThank you Pat. I think part of the success of this painting is due to the paper. This is the first time I have used 300# hot press paper. I have always disliked 140# hot press paper because it is hard to get smooth washes and build up deep colors with a series of washes which is how I paint. I had this sample of 300# paper that was the size I wanted for this painting so I thought I'd try it. I love it! It is a completely different paper from the 140# hot press. I bought 2 sheets of it last week and am currently working of a full sheet painting on it and I think it is my new favorite paper. It gives such a velvetly look to the painting that is not possible with cold press paper.
