Tropical Fragrance - Watercolor

This was such a fun painting.  I love these flowers.  I know I say that about almost every flower but I am a gardener so that's to be expected.  Plumeria are such fragrant beauties.  They remind me of my first trip to Hawaii and bring back wonderful memories.  I painted this on Ampersand's Aquabord which I love.  I also really like this 6" x 6" format.  When they are framed in the drop-in frames, they look stunning and none of the painting is hidden behind the frame.  You can see what I mean below:

Sunny Days

I haven't painted sunflowers for quite awhile and was appreciating a beautiful sunny day so I thought these flowers would make a good subject. I had a small ampersand aquabord (also called claybord textured) and wanted this to be a loose watercolor painting but, as usual, it became a much tighter painting than I had planned. I'm such a literal person it's hard for me to paint loose, gestural paintings. I really appreciate them by other artists but can't seem to paint in that style. Oh well, I guess our personalities are what they are and we expose them through our art.

Pink Bracts

This was such a fun painting to do. The surface is Aquabord, made by Ampersand. A few weeks ago, I finished a painting on Claybord, also by Ampersand which was really hard to work on. After finishing it, I discovered that it isn't a surface meant for watercolor. Well, no wonder I had so much trouble! I still had to use a different style of painting on this because the paint sits on the surface and easily lifts so when adding the darker values I had to be careful but since I knew that when I started, I had a different mindset going into it. It was fun to be able to completely lift out color and I love the brilliance of the painting compared to paintings on paper. It doesn't really show in this photo but this really has a glow to it. I do love vivid color!
