The Question - Oil Painting

I painted this as a gift for my friend's son and his new bride.  He is also friends with our daughter and he is the first of her high school group to get married.  The wedding was this last Saturday and was so beautiful.  It was held in a vineyard in Temecula.  It felt so strange to see him standing up there getting married.  I still think of him as a kid even though he is now a young adult.  I know that others in their group will be following his lead soon but I wish they would wait because it really makes me feel old.  Geez, what's next....babies????  I'm too young for this next generation business.

On their wedding website, they posted the photo that I used for this painting.  According to the caption on the photo, 'dead ahead' is where he 'popped the question' in Peter's Canyon.  I always hesitate to foist one of my paintings on someone unless I know that they like that specific painting because art is so personal and subjective.  However, I wanted to give them something that would be personal because their entire family is very special to us.  I hope this reminds them of that special day when they committed to becoming husband and wife.

  1. I know what you mean about art as a gift. I bought a beautiful bride and groom painting walking down the aisle for my BIL and his wife for their wedding gift. You could only see their back side, the pews, the hair color. It was so beautiful and painted by Julie Hill. I framed it beautifully and you know they never enthused over the gift. I had to ask them if they liked it and they said yes, but that was about it. We also gave them money...Had I received such a gift, I would have been over the moon. And it looked just like the two of them, to top it off!

That all said, I suspect that this couple will be over the moon with this touching and personal and gorgeous painting, Nancy! Never doubt yourself, my friend. This is fabulous!!

  7. I'm sure the young couple will love this, Nancy! I think the bend in the road represents their journey to life's new experiences.

It is done wonderfully with the expressive palette knife.

Oh Dean, I like your vision about the path. I'll have to tell them that. What a beautiful thought.

    Thank you so much Hilda.

  10. Thank you, Nancy, for your visit to my blog and your kind comments! I really love your painting at Peter's Canyon!! Wow, I'm sure they are thrilled with your painting, especially with the significance of its place!

You asked about the black paper I used and also the kinds of colored pencils. The paper is a very smooth black from Molly Hawkins (Midnight black, I think). Its about 110lb, if I remember right. I also use Prismacolor pencils (the regular kind, not the Verithin). The yellow DOES have a hard time on the black, but a layer of white down first seems to take care of that issue!
Thanks again for your visit... I always love visiting your blog!

  14. What a wonderful gift, Nancy. The painting is beautiful and is about more than just the subject which is beautifully rendered I might add! I had to comment because 2 of my children are in their 20s and old enough to be... well.. married, and having babies! Yikes, we are that old! So far as I can tell, there are no weddings or babies in my near future but when the time comes I will be blessed.

  15. Thank you Robin. Both of my kids are in their early 20s and I'm sure weddings and babies will happen before I know it. Time passes so quickly and I feel as you do that when the right time comes, I will be blessed.
