Budding Plumeria, 30 in 30 - Day 3

Today was a frustrating painting day.  I started a different painting and thought it was finished and then decided that I didn't like it so I painted this one.  I'm not crazy about it either.  It doesn't have the glow that I was trying to achieve, but it is finished so I guess that's good.

January is beginning to look like a very long month.  It's only day three and already I'm spending way too much time each day trying to decide what to paint.  I knew that picking a subject was going to be hard, but I didn't think it would be this hard.

I really like to paint large paintings so picking something to paint small is frustrating.  Looks like tomorrow's painting will be another vegetable or fruit.

  1. This is a lovely painting. I understand the frustration of trying to figure out what to paint and what you do paint not turning out as you desire. I have had those days. Keep up the great work. Katrina

  2. I like this one, I think you captured the delicacy of the flowers very nicely.

I did the 30 in 30 challenge twice in the past, and I too had trouble with them. It's hard to get yourself into a groove of churning out small paintings - and liking them! But working small was the only way I was able to do it. When I had a good day, I often painted the same subject twice that day so I could try & be a day ahead. Good Luck - I passed on it this time. I stressed myself out too much the last time trying to succeed. Try not to let it get to you - it's an exercise that you will get through. You're a good artist, don't let the subject choices throw you!

    1. Thanks Nan. I re-did the onion for day 4 in a different medium so I'm not so stressed today.

  3. I think this does indeed have a glow, Nancy. I also think it is beautiful! So now a bit of a suggestion...you can always check out Paint My Photo for subject matter for this challenge. Course, deciding what to paint is still necessary if you use that site; so many beautiful images, so little time!!

  4. Nancy, this is a beautiful little painting!

It's wonderful that you are giving this "painting a day" a go! I would imagine that it would get easier as time goes by. It would also be a good chance to do a series or a few series which would eliminate trying to figure out what to paint.

    Happy New Year!

    1. Hi Kathleen. Doing series is a good idea. I hope this gets easier as the month goes along. I think it is a very good way to challenge myself but like anything new, it takes awhile to settle into it.

  5. Congratulations you lived through it, and got some lovely detail in the flower. Also like the softness of the background as it really shoots the flower forward. Think there was a full moon yesterday as everyone seemed to have issues of some kind. Will look for your next fruit :) Ah (sigh) another day, got to figure out another painting.

  6. Hi Nancy, I like the way you painted the flowers, I think the glow does come across. I've painted pink plumeria before (we call it frangipani in St. Lucia) - I like painting the little twist on the buds. :)
